Leicestershire’s Tony Glover has taken over a year to rise, eye-watering 8.5 kg (18 lb 12 oz) measures about 81 cm (32 in) which will be enough to generate 250 bhajis of onion. Glover, 50, has been cultivating vegetables since his teens. About the giant onion he said “I offer them a food rich in nitrogen and have to make sure that the humidity is perfect. I’ve even got greenhouse grow-lights installed to simulate the sun as the days get shorter. “That’s a shallot of energy.
