Largest Administrative Building

BUCHAREST, Romania — The Palace of the Romanian Parliament (Chief Architect Mrs. Anca Petrescu) has an area of 360,000 square meters — setting the world record record for the largest administrative building (for civilian use*).  The Parliament Palace is also the most expensive government building in the world: the gross revised costs (2006) are calculated at USD 4 billion.

The Palace was constructed almost entirely of Romanian materials.
.Among them: 3,500 tons of crystal- 480 chandeliers, 1,409 ceiling lights and mirrors; 700,000 tons of steel and bronze for monumental doors and windows, candlesticks and capitals; 900,000 m3 of wood (over 95 percent domestic) for parquet and wainscotting, including walnut, oak, sweet cherry, elm, sycamore maple; 200,000 m2 in woolen carpets in various sizes

The security features, a testament to Ceausescu’s concerns of attack, might still be useful during the NATO meeting in April if the members of the Alliance are to come under threat. The building is being designed for a high degree of health,” she told Reuters.

Underground parking is convenient enough for 20,000 passengers! Parliament’s Palace spans 270 m by 240 m, 86 m high and 92 m below ground. It has 1,100 rooms and is 12 floors tall, with four new underground levels currently accessible and in service, and four more are being completed in various phases.
