Michelle Obama is a lawyer and writer who was the U.S. First Lady from 2009 to 2017. She is the wife of Barack Obama, the 44th U.S. President. Michelle based her energies, as the first lady, on social problems such as obesity, safe living and education. Her 2018 autobiography, Being, speaks about the experiences that influenced her, from her Chicago upbringing to her White House years.
As the United States ‘ first lady, Michelle focused her attention on issues such as helping military families, helping working women balance career and family, and encouraging national service.
Michelle and Barack worked at homeless shelters and soup kitchens in Washington, D.C., during the first year of the Obama presidency. Michelle has made appearances at public schools, highlighting the importance of community service and schooling.
Ever aware of the diet and health of her family, Michelle embraced the healthy-food campaign and advised White House kitchens to cook organic food for visitors and their families.
Michelle worked with 23 fifth graders from a nearby Washington, D.C., school in March 2009. To grow a 1,100-square-foot fresh vegetable garden and to create beehives on the White House’s South Lawn. She has also placed efforts to combat childhood obesity near the top of her agenda.
Michelle remained committed to her health-and-wellness campaigns during her tenure as first lady. In 2012, as part of her Let’s Move Initiative, she announced a new fitness program for the girls. Together with the United States She tried to encourage young people to seek out a new sport or hobby through the Olympic team and other sports organisations.
In May 2018, Michelle and Barack revealed they had signed a multi-year deal through their company, Higher Ground Producers, to produce series and films for Netflix. “Barack and I have always invested in the ability of storytelling to inspire us, to help us see the world around us differently,” the former first lady said in a statement.
Their first collective venture culminated in the release of American Factory by Netflix in August 2019, a documentary about the opening of a Chinese-owned automotive glass factory in Dayton, Ohio in 2015, and the conflict between various cultures and business interests. A success with critics, American Factory in February 2020 received an Academy Award for best feature documentary.
